NHPA HALL OF FAME

Horseshoe Pitchers Hall joins other niche shrines
JEFF DOUGLAS

WENTZVILLE, Mo. - While all the talk this weekend is about the horses at the Kentucky Derby, the game of horseshoes is the talk of this town on the far outskirts of St. Louis.

Ground was broken Friday for the Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame and Museum, bringing to the area yet another niche shrine to rival the Bowling Hall of Fame and the Dog Hall of Fame.

"It's an important day for the sport," said Dave Loucks, who heads the National Horseshoe Pitchers Foundation. "This has been a long time coming."

More than 100 of the game's best players and supporters have already been enshrined in the Cooperstown of horseshoes that was originally going to be built in Tennessee.

The name Ted Allen might not ring a bell, but he's considered the Babe Ruth of horseshoes. The 10-time World Champion horseshoe pitcher dominated the sport through the Great Depression and into the 1950s. The game's first World Series of sorts was held back in 1909.

The hall opens this fall at a St. Charles County park and will house memorabilia from the game.

Instead of breaking ground with a shovel, a dozen honorees kicked up some dirt Friday by launching golden horseshoes at a golden spike.

The new facilities will have 16 indoor courts and eight more atop the rolling hills of the lush park.

The Heartland is where the sport is most popular and a perfect location for the hall, Loucks said. There are almost 1,000 members of the Horseshoe Pitchers Association in Missouri alone.

Today, thousands of people play the game, Loucks said, either in serious league competition or at backyard cookouts.

It's not just for gray-haired folks at retirement age, even though many of the people at Friday's groundbreaking fit that description.

Paul Stewart, president of the National Horseshoe Pitchers Association, the governing body for the sport, said the game brings together young and old with tradition. And it takes a lot of practice to be good.

"There aren't many naturals in this sport," he said.

Well, maybe one.

Some say Alan Francis can pitch a ringer (that's hooking the horseshoe on a steel stake) nine out of ten tries. He even has his own signature brand of horseshoes.

The horseshoe hall-of-famer and reigning 11-time World Horseshoe Pitching Champion was in Wentzville this weekend for a tournament to celebrate the new hall of fame.
