PLEASE NOTE

During the first week of June, Tim Ahles, of the West St. Paul Club, conducted horseshoe pitching classes at Park High School in Cottage Grove, MN.  One of the Phy Ed teachers was using the last week of school to introduce his students to other sports, such as, horseshoe pitching and bocce ball.

A morning and afternoon horseshoe class was held on each of two consecutive days.  Each class length was 1 1/2 hours which allowed for about 1 hour of horseshoe pitching.  The school allowed horseshoe stakes to be driven into the sandy infield area of a seldom used baseball diamond.  Six, 30 ft. courts were set-up for about 20 students in each session.   Most of the students had never pitched horseshoes before, so the emphasis was on teaching the students the fundamentals of the pitching motion and scoring.

At the end of each class, a 2-page handout was given to each student describing our horseshoe organizations, including web site addresses, and promoting the West St. Paul Junior League.  It is not expected that any of these high school students will join a junior league but they were asked to pass the information to their younger siblings or neighbors.  And, of course, it is hoped that later these students will remember this experience and join an adult league.

The Phy Ed teacher indicated there was a possibility that Tim would be invited back for further horseshoe pitching instructions as part of a lifetime sports program, in the fall.

To:  WSP Junior League Horseshoe Pitchers                             Summer, 2008

From:  Tim Ahles

Junior League Director,

West St. Paul Horseshoe Pitching Club

Below is information that describes our Junior Player Program that is conducted during the summer months, between mid-June and mid-August on Wednesday afternoons, at 1 pm.  Our roof-covered horseshoe pitching courts are located at the West St. Paul Sports Center at the corner of Oakdale and Wentworth avenues.

Several local businesses are once again sponsoring the Junior League.  Their generosity allows the purchase of the shirts, membership cards, and required equipment for the Junior Players.  On the last day of the 8-week season, a small party and award ceremony is held at the horseshoe courts with free hamburgers and shakes provided by our sponsors.

Last year, we had 30 boys and girls, between the ages of 7-18, participating in our Junior League.  We look forward to your participation in the Junior League and we encourage you to invite your other friends and relatives to join, also.

In addition to playing in the WSP Junior league, members are encouraged to also pitch in tournaments held throughout the state.  All entry fees for WSP members will be paid by the club.  All contestants are placed in a class of pitchers of their own ability and compete for trophies.

a) CLUB TOURNAMENTS:  Most MN horseshoe clubs host a tournament that is held on their home courts, usually on weekends.  Many of these tournaments include a junior division and interested players should contact the tournament director for junior schedules.

(See the Ringer Digest or MGSHPA web site www.minnesotahorseshoes.com for the schedule.)

b) JUNIOR ONLY TOURNAMENT: This year the Junior Only Tournament will be held on July 26, 2008 in Montgomery, MN in conjunction with the Montgomery Kolachy Days celebration.

Note: A kolacky is a small dinner roll-like pastry which is folded, enclosing filling in the center, such as, prune, poppy seed, apricot, apple, blueberry and raspberry.  Rides, games, food, crafts, and many other events will be included in the celebration that is held adjacent to the horseshoe courts.  See web site: http://www.montgomerymn.org/kdayindex.html for information.

c) MN STATE TOURNAMENT: Held in Genola, MN (near Pierz, MN) on Labor Day weekend.  Here is an opportunity to pitch against junior players from other areas through out the state and compete for a prestigious state tournament trophy.

From:  Tim Ahles

Junior League Director,

West St. Paul Horseshoe Pitching Club

Attached is a flyer that describes our Junior Player Program that is conducted during the summer months, between mid-June and mid-August on Wednesday afternoons, at 1 pm.  Our roof-covered horseshoe pitching courts are located at the West St. Paul Sports Complex at the corner of Oakdale and Wentworth avenues.

Last year, we had 30 boys and girls, between the ages of 7-18, participating in our Junior League.  This year we will continue to work toward increasing the size of our program.  We have already received the help of the local school districts to inform their students of our program, via the posting of our flyers and the distribution of their newsletters.

Several local businesses are once again sponsoring the Junior League.  Their generosity allows the purchase of the shirts and required equipment for the Junior Players.  On the last day of the 8-week season, we hold a small party and award ceremony at the horseshoe courts with free hamburgers and shakes provided by our sponsors.

NOTES:

This year, the “Junior Only Tournament” will be held at the West St. Paul Horseshoe Courts in West St. Paul on Saturday, June 10, 2006.  There is no charge to enter this tournament and it is an excellent opportunity for our Junior Players to compete for trophies, against boys and girls from other horseshoe clubs.

Also, for adults, our WSP Horseshoe Club will also be holding its annual “WSP Open Tournament” on the same day, Saturday, June 10, 2006.  Adult players from many cities in Minnesota and neighboring states, including players from our club, will be competing.  This is an opportunity for the Junior Players to watch some of the better adult players.

Sincerely,

To: West St. Paul Junior Horseshoe Players October, 2005

From: Tim Ahles, WSP Junior Director

I am very grateful to all the junior players for joining the league and faithfully attending the activities each week and I am looking forward to your return to the league, next year.

I am sending each junior player a Certificate of Achievement that summaries their 2005 statistics and a patch that can be sewn onto a shirt, jacket, or hat. Both the certificate and the patch are provided by the NHPA (National Horseshoe Pitchers Associations).

Your 2005 league statistics and tournament results have been submitted to the NHPA and can be viewed at the NHPA web site: www.horseshoepitching.com
Follow the NATSTATS link.
Please, be patient if the records are not on the site, yet. Check the site often.

Also, check the MGSHPA (Minnesota Gopher State Horseshoe Pitchers Association) web site for information about all Minnesota adult and junior players at www.minnesotahorseshoes.com

And, finally the WSP Horseshoe Club has its own web site at: www.wsphorseshoeclub.4t.com

Five players from West St Paul participated in the Junior Only Tournament in St. Paul in August. This was the first-ever tournament for them and they all played very well and I am sure that each one gained some valuable experience in tournament play.

NEXT YEAR:
We hope to continue to expand the junior league and you can help by talking to you friends and young relatives about horseshoe pitching and encouraging them to join you in playing in the league. If we continue to exceed 24 players, then we will need to expand to a Wednesday and Thursday afternoon schedule, which would be wonderful.

We may expand the number of shoes pitched in each game from 30 to 40.
And, using a team format instead of individual play is also another possible change.

I would like to see more junior players participate in future tournaments held by our club or other clubs within the state. I will keep you informed about next year’s tournaments or you can see these tournaments posted in the Ringer Digest newsletter.

I will continue to be the WSP Junior Director, but, I have also accepted the job of Junior Promotion Director for the MGSHPA. In this new capacity, I will try to encourage more boys and girls, throughout our state, to participate in this great sport of ours. Currently, there are about 110 Minnesota junior players. Each issue of the Ringer Digest will contain an article by me in the column “Spotlight on Juniors”.

Thank you and I hope to see all of you next summer.

JUNIOR ONLY TOURNAMENT at West St. Paul
submitted by WSP Junior Director, Tim Ahles

This year the Junior Only Tournament will be held on the weekend of June 10-11, 2006, at the roof-covered courts in West St. Paul. The tournament will be held in conjunction with the adult WSP Open Tournament of the same weekend. Details of the exact date and time will be announced, later, in the Ringer Digest. It is expected that an on-site registration will be used, as in the past.

Last year, 17 players participated in the Junior Only Tournament that was held at the St. Paul Ramsey courts. This year, we are looking to attract even more boys and girls. Many of the Junior leagues are just starting up for the year, so it will be a good opportunity for the young pitchers to apply the lessons learned last year. And, each one will gain valuable experience in playing against pitchers from other clubs throughout the state.

OTHER JUNIOR TOURNAMENTS

The annual MN State Tournament that is held in Genola, MN (near Pierz, MN), over the Labor Day weekend, also hosts a Junior Division. All MN junior players are encouraged to take part and compete for one of the coveted State Tournament trophies. Watch the Ringer Digest for details of schedules and deadlines.

All horseshoe clubs are encouraged to incorporate Junior Pitchers in their weekend club tournaments. They should make known, through the Ringer Digest or tournament flyers, the format of play, such as, separate junior classes, mixed play within all adult classes, or mixed play within only the other 30 ft. classes of seniors and women.
